F+++. A RARE FORM OF A RARE SPECIES. Vos & Terryn (2007): “Not common. From the Philippines, west to South Africa. Rarely reported from Australia and northernmost New Zealand”. The center of distribution of T. dolium is clearly the Philippines. Virtually all the material comes from this archipelago, but in the wild the chances of finding a T. dolium are nil: it is a truly rare Tonna. Most Tonna are indeed hard to find, as the shells only emerge from the sand for a few minutes: the time to grab their prey and disappear, much like the Harpa. This is why the shells are “clean” when they are collected. This is an extremely strange Tonna that is difficult to assign to a species. Only very few specimens of this unusual shape are known worldwide today.
