Family | Volutidae |
Name | Paramoria guntheri - UNIQUE PATTERN , Smith, 1886 |
Size | 47.4 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This UNIQUE and outstanding specimen of this rare, highly sought after ‘classic’ endemic South Australian species, exhibits a pattern in which the axial lines upon the anterior half of the shell are those of typical guntheri, whilst the posterior half resemble those of the related P. weaveri – more numerous, and of closer proximity. This is a very rare DEEP-WATER form, of which few specimens are known, and is quite distinct from the shallower water, dived form. The handful of known examples were found in the mid 1990s, at the substantial depth of 120 m. So far as I know, none of the other few known specimens exhibit the unique pattern of the current specimen. No fresh specimens of this form will ever be collected in future. A unique example for the highly advanced Volutidae specialist. Data: Off Evans Island, Nuyts Archipelago, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 120 m; trawled; 1994. Size: 47.4 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
