Item | # 0003475020 | Family | Cassidae | Name | Phalium areola agnitum - ULTRA-BIG; EXCEPTIONAL , Iredale, T., 1927 |
Size | 87.2 mm, w/o |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | The LAST and LARGEST specimen of the JES Collection of this exquisite pale form. PERFECTION. Ultra-large size. White ground, decorated with spiral bands of large, roughly rectangular caramel maculations. Note: At some point in history, an error with regards the name was made, which has been much perpetuated, referring to ‘magnita’, whereas the correct name ‘agnitum’, (see Iredale’s original description). Iredale proposed the name as a full species, although why he did so is a mystery, as the species is patently areola. Neverthless, the name remains useful in separating these large, pale shells from typical specimens of darker colour. Data: Off Tabalong, Dauis, Panglao, Visayas, Bohol, Philippines; upon sand/rubble substrate; 20-30 m; dived; 2023. Size: 87.2 mm. Grading: Gem; w/o. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
