Item | # 0003489662 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus crocatus - ULTRA-BIG; RARE COLOUR , Lamarck, J.P.A., 1810 |
Size | 67.8 mm, w/o |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | This outstanding, ultra-large specimen – the LAST of the JES Collection – is of exceptional quality for such size, and of a rare colour: brilliant golden yellow – the saffron for which the species is named – as opposed to typically much darker caramel. Ground decorated with sporadic pure white, somewhat triangular markings. Pale pink apex. Mature, PERFECT apertural lip. One of my favourite shells of the entire JES Collection, and a rare opportunity for a Conidae connoisseur. Data: Off Olango, Olango Island Group, Central Visayas, Cebu, Philippines; upon coral sand/rubble substrate; 15-20 m; dived; 2012. Size: 67.8 mm. Grading: Gem; w/o. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
