Note | One very nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata with wide margins. This species, as most congeners, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and sharp. This specimen is in particularly good condition, with a very nice border of the lip with tiny nicks (as can be seen in the images), and with a natural uncleaned dorsum partially covered with pinkish calcareous algae which can be cleaned further to reveal the burgundy-colored shell dorsum. A low initial price for a very good condition specimen. |
