Fissurella maxima Very Nice, Selected
110 mm     Caldera, northern Chile     12,00 €
Item# 0003505536
FamilyFissurellidae
NameFissurella maxima - Very Nice, Selected , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834
Size110 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteOne very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain specimens over 100 mm like this one. This specimen is in very good condition for the species, has a very concave and wide shell, with an almost perfect lip only a few tiny chips, and a dorsum partially cleaned, which has some calcareous and reddish algae that can be cleaned further, and with tiny barnacle boring holes but with no Scurria scars or other damage (as can be seen in the images). A low initial price for a very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella.
