Note | One nice specimen of Fissurella costata, a rather rare species, in very good condition for the species. Large Fissurella species are actively collected by fishermen with hooks, so they often have nicks and damage on the border of the lip, but this particular specimen is in very good condition, with just a few chips in the lip (as can be seen in the images), and with a natural uncleaned dorsum still covered by whitish calcareous algae which can be cleaned further. Fissurella costata is hard to find in good condition, it is never found in the beach, as it lives solely in the surf zone attached to large rocks in difficult to reach areas, and it has a sharp lip that breaks easily when collected. This is a rather rare species and they are always found with the dorsum fully covered with calcareous algae. An interesting large species of Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific at a rather low price due to the rather small size of the shell. |
