| Note | One very nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata with narrow margins. This species, as most congeners, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and very sharp. This specimen is in particularly good condition for the species, with a very nice border of the lip with minuscule nicks (as can be seen in the images), and with a natural partially cleaned dorsum with some white calcareous algae and brownish algae which can be cleaned further and some barnacle boringholes as can be seen in the images. The dorsum can be oiled to reveal the burgundy-colored shell dorsum, but I prefer to keep them in natural condition. This specimen was recently collected and it is one of the largest F. latimarginata specimens which I have obtained. A similar, smaller specimen was auction in July of this year for 280 euro at the Conchology Inc. auction. A low initial price for a very interesting specimen of large Fissurella. |
