Item | # 0003505837 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Very Nice, Large! , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 110 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain specimens over 100 mm like this one. This specimen is in excellent condition for the species, with a nice lip but unfortunately with a few low chips (as can be seen in the images), and a dorsum cleaned of any epibionts, with no Scurria scars but with tiny barnacle boreholes and little scars (as can be seen in the images). A low initial price for a very nice and very large cleaned specimen of Fissurella. |
