Item | # 0003508939 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Giant! , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 127 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One nice and giant specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurellidae. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of giant Lessonia algae. Large Fissurella species in Chile are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and almost always damaged. The dorsum of the shell is always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently very difficult to obtain giant specimens over 120 mm like this one. This one was collected recently by fishermen, and it is in very good condition for the species and the size, with just a few chips in the border of the shell which explain its low initial price. The shell is very thick and tall, and the dorsum is in natural condition and it can be further cleaned. A low initial price for a very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella. It is amazing holding it in the hand and I will be adding a normal-sized specimen to the winner of this lot, to compare in situ the size.
