Item | # 0003509618 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella costata - Very Nice, Large , Lesson, 1831 |
Size | 82.4 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice, large, and selected cleaned specimen of Fissurella costata, a rather rare species, in excellent condition for the species. Large Fissurella species are actively collected by fishermen with hooks, so they often have nicks and damage on the border of the lip, but this particular specimen is in very good condition, with just a few tiny nicks in the lip and with a cleaned dorsum (it can be still cleaned some details) which shows the nice costate sculpture of the dorsum and the nice yellowish color crossed by rays of very pale brown. Fissurella costata is hard to find in good condition (it is hard to collect in situ too), it is never found in the beach, as it lives solely in the surf zone attached to large rocks in difficult to reach areas, and it has a sharp lip that breaks easily when collected. This is a rather rare species, and they are always found with the dorsum fully covered with calcareous algae and other epibionts. This is an exceptional and large specimen from my own collection. This is your opportunity to obtain a very interesting large species of Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific, in excellent condition, for a low initial price. |
