Item | # 0003514952 |
Family | Littorinidae |
Name | Austrolittorina fernandezensis - Very Rare, very endemic , (Rosewater, 1970) |
Size | 15 mm, w/o |
Locality | Selkirk Island |
Note | One nice and large specimen of the very endemic Austrolittorina fernandezensis. This specimen comes from the very remote Selkirk Island, in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago. I have noted that A. fernandezensis specimens from Island are much larger in comparison with those from Robinson Crusoe, perhaps they are a subspecies as Selkirk island is about 165 km from Robinson Crusoe in the open ocean. This specimen was live collected in the 1960's and it preserves its soft parts dry inside the conch, with its operculum closing the aperture. An interesting, rare, and hard to obtain species from an Oceanic Island in the southeastern Pacific. |
