Item | # 0003516048 |
Family | ECHINOIDEA |
Name | Loxechinus albus - Very Small! , (Molina, 1782) |
Size | 14.8 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice and interesting very small specimen of the edible sea urchin Loxechinus albus (Molina, 1782). This is a large sea urchin which is actively searched for its unique flavour. It is locally abundant but it is very hard to obtain intact shells, as the fishermen who collect them break their shells in order to prepare it. This one was washed ashore intact entangled in algae, without its spines and with soft parts dry inside (you can see the Aristotle's lantern in the ventral image). This is an interesting Natural History Item for your Wunderkammer for a low initial price. This would look very nice presented together with a normal-sized or a large Loxechinus albus specimen. |
