Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One large and very nice specimen of the very endemic species Bostryx calderaensis. This species was recently described and it lives in a small area in the coastal desert, although it has never been found alive. Most Bostryx species in Chile live at a narrow coastal band which receives fog from the sea (Camanchaca) and which has some vegetation; it is the only suitable habitat for these snails in the very arid northern part of the country. Bostryx species in Chile are restricted to small distributions, and some of them are prone to extinction due to urbanistic development (particularly this species, which lives in the city of Caldera). This species has a very nice shell with a pink-peach aperture as it was found fresh-dead, and it was found in a sandy area inside the city of Caldera, the type locality for the species. I will send a PDF of the paper describing this species to the bidder for this shell. An interesting natural history item. This is your opportunity to obtain a nice, rare, and very endemic landshell from northern Chile. |
