| Note | GEM. UNEXPECTED: NOT COLOBA BUT CHINENSIS. This is an uppermost interesting piece for cowry experts: the shell has been dredged in KwaZulu-Natal, in the same area where the O. chinensis violacea cf. with orange base are caught in deep water. What is uppermost puzzling is the extreme globose shape, which at first glance makes one think about the O. coloba from Sri-Lanka-Thailand area, an Andaman Sea shell. Differences with coloba are the less orange base and callus on the sides, the more pronounced violet spots and slightly more tooth on the outer lip (at least one more than most coloba). While large and heavy coloba of 30 mm have the tendency to become irregular in shape this one is smooth and perfectly rounded. There ist not a figure of this shell in the literature. Superior rarity, intriguing, some will put it under the name "tortirostris", a name used and misused fro freak violacea from South Africa. A combination of rarity and beauty.
