Note | Argonauta argo are truly a wonder of nature. They are the largest of the paper nautilus with the females growing to sizes in excess of 200mm while males attain sizes of up to 20mm. They are the external shell of a free-swimming oceanic cephalopod or pelagic octopus. In early winter, the female secretes up to 50,000 embryos in the keel of the shell which acts as an egg case. They feed on plankton and jelly fish and are in turn predicated upon by pelagic fish such as dolphin fish, tuna, and bill fish. Occasionally they wash up on our south coast during and after severe winter storms. The Chinese name for the species translates to “White Sea Horse Nest”. They are an incredible structure. This specimen was collected from Windy Harbour in Western Australia after a winter storm and is in exceptional condition. |
