Note | Wonderfully rhomboidal, strong dorsal patterning, high dorsal dome and heavy weight ratio are premier features of this wonderful specimen (48.5g). Excellent nacre gloss, rich/dark dorsal pattern, dark dorsal botch, dense marginal spotting and a bright orange aperture characterize this superb mappa subspecies. Gorgeous specimen with intense dorsal pigmentation and bright orange hued aperture. The shell glows neon red under fluorescent lighting. Collected on a night dive by master Scuba diver Paul Kanner in a rock crevice at 15-25 meters on Mappa Rock, Taiohae Bay, Nuku Hiva, Marquesas in 11/ 2000. Original data slip from Paul included. The shell was paratype No. 14 in the original published description establishing this distinctive geographic variation as a subspecies. The specimen has a glazed over shallow micro-pit mid-dorsum. Grade: Gem minus. |
