Note | One nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata. This species, as most congeners, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and sharp. This specimen is in particularly good condition, with only a few tiny nicks in the border of the lip, and with a natural dorsum (lightly cleaned) partially covered with red-brown algae, which can be cleaned further with some patience to reveal the burgundy-brown colored shell dorsum. A low price for a very good condition and large specimen of Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific. |
