Fissurella latimarginata
80.7 mm     Caldera, northern Chile     5,00 €
Item# 0003583956
FamilyFissurellidae
NameFissurella latimarginata , G. B. Sowerby I, 1835
Size80.7 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteA very nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata. This species, as most Fissurella in Chile and Peru, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and sharp. This very nice specimen is in particularly good condition, with a few nicks in the border of the lip, and with a nice cleaned dorsum. A very low price for a very good condition and large specimen of Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific.
