Note | Bathybembix humboldti Rehder, 1971 is a rare deep water species (200-1480 m depth) which is found from Ecuador to Chile. This species is only found as bycatch in shrimp and prawn trawls and it is very rare, as the fishermen here in Chile consume them and discard their shells. The shell of this species is found almost always decollated, without the protoconch and first whorls in adult specimens, while juvenile specimens retain sometimes the first whorls. This selected specimen was collected alive trawled in 320 m depth off Valparaiso, central Chile and it is in good condition for the species, retaining part of its ealier whorls and its periostracum, and having a very nice lip with little damage as can be seen in the images. I am offering them for a very low initial price due to the condition of the shell. This is one of the largest Calliotropidae species and a very nice Natural History Item. |
