F+++. The Spondylus maestratii in superb coloration and very large. Described from New Caledonia, the holotype is purplish and has almost no spines. This piece has the alternating pale ribs near the periostome in common with the holotype. It’s coloration and spines are much better, the size is much bigger (the holotype measures 38 mm). Definitely one of the best deep water Spondylus ever found. HYPOTYPE in the twin books: 1000 Shells, exceptionals from the Philippines.
Philippines. Balut Island. Tangle nets, 50-150 m. 2012.
