| Note | F+++. An average sized S. varius in very perfect condition. This is the rare form with very long spines. Occasionally young shells come with spines, but these are never colored. From the ORANGE umbo type, much less common than the purple ones. S. varius lives only in caves on the steep drop-offs where the shells are filtering the water, valves wide open. In order to keep the upper valve upwards, the animal produces an air bubble inside the shell, so it makes the valve lighter. In this case, the air bubble inside exploded as in most pieces: when coming up from deep the pressure expands the air with all the consequences known. A curiosity, in this case a beautiful one.
