| Note | Large, dark and exceptionally bulbous specimen from a remote Eastern Pacific island. If you don't believe it's remote, please look at a map or Goggle it. The shell is listed as a subspecies to bring attention to the importance of this extraordinary isolated Conus colony. Very few specimens collected from this area. This form of purpurascens was first described by G.B.I. Sowerby in 1834 as illustration No. 87 in the original publication as Conus regalitatis, which may be the appropriate subspecies name. Although this form is not yet named as a subspecies, it most likely will reach that status in the near future. The shell is moderately heavy, with acceptable nacre gloss, perfect natural lip and spire. The solid dark brown color is exquisite, with three attractive violet toned patterned bands. The central band is most remarkable. The specimen was collected by Scuba diver Ron McPeak off Clipperton Atoll, Eastern Pacific, off the Mexican coast (French possession) on sand/rubble bottom under coral slabs at 10-20 meters in 4/1994. The specimen comes with the original data slip. The shell exhibits a flawless natural lip and a few growth folds along with a deeper growth fold on the mid-body whorl. Grade: F+++. |
