| Item | # 0003627065 | | Family | Fissurellidae | | Name | Fissurella latimarginata - Nice, natural dorsum , G. B. Sowerby I, 1835 |
| Size | 67.1 mm |
| Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
| Note | A nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata. This species, as most Fissurella in Chile and Peru, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and sharp. This narrow-margins specimen is in particularly good condition, with a few tiny nicks in the border of the lip, and with a lightly cleaned and natural dorsum. A very low initial price for an interesting Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific. FL-183. |
