| Note | One very nice live-collected specimen of the rather rare species Acanthina unicornis. This species has the thickest shell of all Chilean molluscs, having a very heavy shell and a very thick lip (of about 8 mm in this specimen) with a sharp labral tooth at the lower side of the outer lip. This specimen was collected by fishermen as bycatch in the collection of Fissurellas, and it is a rare species to obtain, because most of the specimens are heavily covered by barnacles, and they are often very damaged. This species is easily missidentified with Acanthina monodon but it can be differenced by the very thick shell (even in smaller specimens) with labral teeth in the interior of the outer lip in older specimens (as in the present specimen). A quick search in the internet show many Acanthina monodon labeled as Acanthina unicornis, but no real Acanthina unicornis at all. A very low initial price for an excellent specimen of a rare muricid endemic from Chile. |
