Item | # 0003631568 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 99.6 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One nice and large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. This specimen is in good condition for the species, with a nice lip with minuscule chips but unfortunately with a scar in the border (as can be seen in the images). The dorsum is cleaned of any epibionts, with no Scurria scars but with some remnants of algae which can be cleaned further to reveal the nice color rays of this species. A low initial price for a very nice and very large cleaned specimen of Fissurella. |
