Item | # 0003631855 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Very Nice, Selected , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 84.8 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice although rather small specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. This specimen is in very good condition for the species, with a nice lip with a single small chip, and a lightly cleaned and very colorful dorsum which show the nice pattern of rays in the dorsum. A very low initial price for a very nice and cleaned specimen of Fissurella maxima. |
