Item | # 0003631938 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Large, selected , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 113.4 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain specimens over 110 mm like this one. This specimen is in excellent condition for the size and the species, with a nice lip with a single chip (as can be seen in the images), and a dorsum cleaned of any epibionts, with no Scurria scars but with some calcareous algae, as can be seen in the images. A low initial price for a very nice and very large cleaned specimen of Fissurella. |
