| Note | Moderately large, heavy, hyper-glazed nacre with an incredible dark/light grey contrasting and interfused "algae bloom" color pattern characterizes this exquisite shell collected from the secret "crash zone" on Oahu. The shell displays a moderate high hump, impressive width (72 mm) and ultra-thick margins. The deep pigmentation collage mixed with a classic mottled pattern, high weight/size ratio and thick nacre gloss characterize this particular standout collectable cowrie (183.6 g). Collected at night by Scuba diver Mike Mangum between boulders and lava rock off North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii in 6/2017. Perfect specimens from this area are virtually impossible to find and this is not one of them. The humpy exhibits expected wear and tear from the "crash zone," including a subnacre wobble on the anterior ramp, subnacre delamination flecks on the base and self-healed/well glossed areas on both extremities. The color pattern and the shell overall visual impact alone negate the imperfections. Hard to capture the unusual beauty of this specimen with conventional photography. Grade: F+/F++. |
