| Name | Conus araneosus nicobaricus - GIANT , Hwass in Bruguière, 1792 |
| Size | 93 mm |
| Locality | Philippines |
| Note | F++/F+++. VERY BIG AND VERY YELLOW INSIDE. We think nicobaricus is a valid species, and it has in common with araneosus only a vague similarity in the pattern which consists of tents and two sparse spiral bands in araneosus.Philippine authors such as Springsteen & Leobrera and myself think it is distinct and valid. So did Subba Rao (2003) and Kaicher. The 19th century experts and authors of big encyclopedia: Sowerby, Reeve, Kiener all think this is a valid species and they mention as locality the Nicobar Islands, from where the name. Here a giant: it’s the 4th largest shell that we got in 10 years, out of 346 specimens. It has a virtual smooth shoulder, a dark pattern of great beauty and it is very yellow inside the aperture. The shell is in fine condition, not gem, because of a growth line on the ventral side and eroded apex as can be seen - the latter is virtually always the case in this species. All by all a major and eye-catching shell in any collection, displayed from the dorsum very suitable also in aesthetic collections.
Philippines. Zamboanga. Zamboanga Peninsula. 10-25 m. 2013.
