Item | # 0003657472 |
Family | Ranellidae |
Name | Priene scabrum - Amazing dwarf! , (P. P. King, 1832) |
Size | 33.2 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One amazing dwarf (WRS?) specimen of Priene scabrum, collected washed ashore alive. This species is the only representative of the genus Priene, a genus endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This is the only Ranellidae found in shallow waters in northern Chile. The shell of this species is usually in very bad condition, with broken protoconch and eroded first whorls. They also have a thick but dehiscent brown hairy periostracum, which hiddens the very nice spiral and axial sculpture in this species. This is an amazing and very nice dwarf specimen, with a very solid shell, and it has a nice lip and aperture with very marked teeth, and a wonderful sculpture. A low initial price for an interesting endemic species from the SE Pacific. |
