GEM. The true C. leehmani in gem, hard to get today. This is a valid species endemic from the Maldive Islands, related to C. barthelemyi and C. gauguini. It has the same noble patina and shape characteristics. The Maldive Islands have a very protected fauna from where that only old pieces find their way to new collections. This leehmani comes from a Belgian collection and was fished more than 40 years ago. The description of this great Conus was painful: there first appeared a manuscript name as we call it: C. pramparti, attributed to Richard, but never published. da Motta & Röckel then described the species and there was a note about it in the HSN of November 1979. In the RKK book there was a rage of lumping and the authors placed it in the gubernator group ! There is no way this is the same species as gubernator, but now unscrupulous dealers sell gubernator forms from Mozambique as C. leehmani !! The leehmani comes in two distinct forms which are fascinating and uncommon to hard to get both of them: a form with much brown-orange flecks, sometimes combined with black, and the present form which is uppermost charming and usually with these strong contrasting black blotches.
