Item | # 0003690954 |
Family | Fissurellidae |
Name | Fissurella costata - Very Nice, Selected , Lesson, 1831 |
Size | 62.9 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice specimen of the rare Fissurella costata. This species is naturally rare and hard to collect because it lives only in large rocks or boulders in the surf zone, so it is always out of reach in the coast and the waves here are huge. This specimen is in excellent condition for the species, has a natural dorsum, ligtly cleaned, and it has the original Scurria parasitica specimen still stuck (and very well camouflaged) in the dorsum. The interior of the shell and the borders are near perfect which is hard to obtain with this species as the borders are sometimes sharp and prone to chip. |
