Item# 0003692416
FamilyConidae
NameDauciconus orion , Broderip, 1833
Size23.7 mm
LocalityMexico
NoteF++. A GREAT BEAUTY IN A QUITE COMMON BUT USUALLY NOT BEAUTIFUL SPECIES. The Conus orion has been described in the Proceedings by Broderip, and taking a look there, I was deceived by his text. Usually Broderip describes well and with much details his affairs, but for orion he is short: "Hab.: In America Centrali (Real Liejos). Found in soft sand in the clefts of rocks." Looking in the literature, we checked 54 photographs: all are sheer ugly. Only one shell is beautiful and matches the amazingly beautiful pattern of the present piece: the Tenorio & All. shell from 2012. A couple of nice ones also in Monnier & All. Better than average, great exception with a beautiful pattern and in pristine condition. Protoconch gone and hardly visible micro chip in the siphonal canal. Museum quality for the species. Mexico. Colima. Manzanillo. Punta Juliapan. Dredged, 35 m. Circa 1980. Ex. collection T. Rice. #1172670
