GEM. A DELIGHTFUL, PROBLEMATIC AND PLEASING MOZAMBIQUE CONUS. When one researches “Conus pennaceus” in the literature, you will find in a few days over 200 photographs. From well over a dozen, possibly even two dozen, different species. If these Conus were from the Cape Verde, experts should have made 3 dozen of species! But the difficulties are huge: localities in vintage collections become vague and the more difficult as one goes back in time, to end up in 1950 with “Indo-Pacific”. But a serious set of collectors and dealers documented very well the Madagascar and Mozambique material since about 20 years. The holotype of pennaceus is a red-brown shell with white tents that have a blue shadow inside. It was figured two times at least: RKK (1995, fig. 1); G. Raybaudi-Massilia (1995 La Conchiglia). You can also see it in the website of Kohn, The Conus Biodiversity website, likely the best image. The colors in RKK are over saturated and do not give a good idea of the real nature of “pennaceus”. It is clear that pennaceus is a form of or even a flat synonym of the species we call today “wrongly” racemosus/behelokensis. This group of Conus, which is sheer beautiful and attractive is a nomenclatoral snakes nest. We here have what is today called the classic Mozambique pennaceus, but an unusual broad specimen with a beautiful color game. It tends to become the broad form “ganensis” from the Maldives. Not so common, as we see it in the literature only twice: a place of honor in Matsukuma & all (1991) Seashells of Rarity & Beauty. And G. Raybaudi (1995) in La Conchiglia. But both more slender and not so “gold” patterned as the piece shown here. The best out of a set of about 50. Mozambique. North Mozambique. Massinga. Dived. 5 m. 2011. #868471
