GEM. THE MAGNIFICENT MAGNIFICUS, A RARITY IN THE PHILIPPINES. A PINKISH Conus magnificus from the Philippines: we got only one piece a year in average. Philippine magnificus with a pinkish hue are rare: one has been figured by Sowerby in the Thesaurus: figure 592/ Wilson (1994) figured one from Australia but the spire looks eroded. Another true “pink” has been shown by Wells & All (1990), from Christmas Island. Conus magnificus is known from Thailand, where many black and white pieces have been takenbetween Burma and Phuket by trawlers. But it does not extend in the Indian Ocean, neither does it in the Pacific. It is a tent Conus typical for the axis Japan-Australia. This magnificus has been hunted by the divers of Conus floccatus in Siargao: it is much rarer than C. floccatus. The shell is well sized and in nice condition. This is a rare Conus in the Philippines. We handled only 12 pieces from this area in 12 years. This is one out of the three best shells and fully adult.
Philippines. Siargao. 25 m. On sand with algae. 2015.
