Note | One very nice specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. This specimen is in very good for the species, with a nice lip with a few shallow chips, and a cleaned, colorful and very sculptured dorsum with some tiny remnants of red algae which can be cleaned further but no Scurria scars or other damage, as can be seen in the images. The dorsum can be carefully cleaned (and/or oiled) further to reveal the nice pattern of rays in the dorsum. A very low initial price for a very nice and cleaned specimen of Fissurella maxima. |
