NameFissurella bridgesii - Very Rare , Reeve, 1849
Size79.8 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteOne very nice specimen of the very rare Fissurella bridgesi, one of the large species of Fissurella endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This species lives in the subtidal in very specific places, and it is found in very low numbers. This is, together with F. pulchra, the rarest Fissurella species found in Chile and PerĂº. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. This particular specimen has a nice thick shell, with a nice natural dorsum with some erosion and some barnacle boreholes. The beveled border is nice with no damages except some tiny chips and some erosion, and the interior of the shell is nice as can be seen in the images. As large Fissurella are commercially exploited in the area they are nowadays more uncommon, and this particular species is very rare. This is an opportunity to obtain a rare and nice specimen from a difficult-to-get species for a low initial price.
