| Note | These two beautiful talpa subspecies collected by the late/great Paul Kanner are a part of Cypraeidae taxonomic history. The two unique specimens are paratypes used to describe and collectively identify/qualify distinctive characteristics that establish this form as a new talpa subspecies. As described by F. Lorenz in Cowries/A Guide to the Gastropod Family Cypraeidae, Volume 1, page 347, the shells from the Marquesas area have "No callus accumulation of the anterior extremity, slightly pointed posterior extremity, columellar teeth not extending into the shell and dorsal bands that are less broad, often forming longitudinal dashes on the plain white dorsal background." Of the two specimens, the larger specimen was collected by Scuba diver Paul Kanner from under rock slabs at 13-19 meters off Taeohae Bay, Nuka Hiva, Marquesas in 3/2003. The smaller specimen was taken by Paul off Matumario Point, Nuka Hiva, Marquesas in 11/2003. The larger specimen has a small healed/subnacre concavity mid-labral lateral wall and the smaller specimen a transverse crease on the anterior ramp. The specimens come with their original data slips. Graded conservatively in both cases. Grade F+++/GEM. |
