Harpago chiragra GIANT

299 mm Australia 190,00 €

|
| Item | # 0003706018 | | Family | Strombidae | | Name | Harpago chiragra - GIANT , Linnaeus, 1758 |
| Size | 299 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | This truly monumental specimen, from the very 'old days' of collecting, comes from the largest race of chiragra ever to inhabit the Earth. Restricted to the archipelago of the Monte Bello Islands, off the northern coast of Western Australia, (where, incidentally, nuclear bomb testing was carried out in the 1950s, with subsequent stories attributing the giganticism of this race to nuclear fallout), I have not heard of any specimens being collected for decades, and believe all the known examples to have been collected prior to the 1990s, with the race now probably being extinct. The World Record Size also comes from this locality. Incredibly solid and heavy for size. Hypermature, with fully formed digits and outer apertural lip. If the winning bidder has never seen one of these Monte Bello giants, they should prepare themselves for a pleasant surprise when they open the parcel.
Grading: F+++. Data: Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate, near reef; 8-12 m; dived; 1969. |
