| Note | F++. The Virroconus ebraeus is one of the most common Conus from the Indo Pacific region. It lives from East Africa all the way to French Polynesia and even Hawaii. It is common on all rocky coasts, or exposed on coral reefs that surface at low tide. These animals hunt most likely small worms and other minute animals hiding in the algae beds from that sun-exposed area. Most shells attract calcareous deposits, which makes them particularly hard to clean, and the ones who do not do that have most often eroded zones on the shells when the periostracum becomes fragile. So, a gem like the present shell is a grand rarity, a fine shell is seldom seen. Very seldom specimen exceed 20 mm in length. So, the state of the art is to find large shells in fine+ or better condition. Then comes the real challenge: pieces with a good pattern. The ebraeus is extremely variable: can have blotches, lines or zigzags, but almost always deep black on pure white, which results, when in good quality in a real natural history treasure.
