| Note | GEM. (G.T. Poppe) An ORANGE shell. In RKK (1995) two “Conus magus forma ustulatus” are shown. One is labeled “New Holland”. The other one “Cebu, Philippines”. This shell corresponds to the Cebu, Philippines type, but is orange colored instead of the classic yellow-green. We use the name ustulatus for such shells, which most often come either from the Olango region in northern Bohol or Masbate. The present shell is very close in coloration to the type of ustulatus, it is only much larger - the type measures 42 mm only - and has no pale band mid-whorl. The ustulatus as figured by Reeve, the author, are very different shells, most probably from the Pionoconus group, but their locality is unknown and their shoulders are much more carinate. Evenhis drawing of what is now the type of ustulatus is yellow, not pinkish and more carinate than the real shell. So, for all these taxonomic reasons, we here deal with an uppermost interesting item. On top of that, this shell is beautiful with a warm pastel orange. Rare, most likely unique.
Philippines. Olango Island. 10-25 m. 2012.
