| Note | F+++/GEM. Conus magus is a name that stands for an “ensemble” of species, subspecies and forms of many different species of “resembling” Conus. To unraffle the mystery of this taxon is extremely difficult: shells are found on almost all reefs and Islands and in many different biotopes: occasionally one can collect them at low tide, especially near mangroves on mud. But also found 1 m deep in rocky reefs far offshore. Or twenty meters deep on sand.... Each locality has it’s variants. While most “magus” are banal shells, occasionally amazing forms turn up. This shell from Negros has a white central band with rusty brown in the background and black markings. There is a superficial resemblance with the yellow and black New Caledonian forms as shown in Estival (1981). Not figured in the recent literature, rare, beautiful.
Philippines. Negros. 10-25 m. 2013.
