GEM. (G.T. Poppe) One of the rarest Conus-forms in the world and the first one in my 40+ years career as a conchologist: a GRANULATE CONUS MAGUS. I handled thousands of magus from everywhere in the Philippines and thought that granulate magus do not exist. The few shells named “magus” with a light granulate structure shown in the literature are either C. cernohorskyi or C. metcalfii. This shell, color-wise belongs to the white-and-yellow form epistomiodes Weinkauff. Museum quality and award-winning, possibly unique. Museum quality and award-winning, we know of 3 specimen and probably there are less than a dozen worldwide known. Conchology, Inc. handled over 2500 selected pieces of Conus magus in 20 years.
Philippines. Leyte. Tabang. 10-20 m. 2012.
