Item | # 0003729795 |
Family | BIVALVIA |
Name | Ostrea chilensis - Hard to obtain , Küster, 1844 |
Size | 56 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One nice specimen of the only Oyster found in central-southern Chile: Ostrea chilensis. This oyster species is native to Chile and New Zealand, and in Chile it is found in a few locations only in the Island of Chiloé, in the southern part of the country. This species has been heavily exploited, and currently it is very hard to obtain. This specimen is in very good condition: it was collected alive by fishermen in shallow water and they come from their northernmost locality in the country. A very low initial price for an interesting and small oyster species. |
