| Note | Collected at the extraordinary depth, for a cowrie, of 1,000 m, this dead-collected, yet exemplary representative specimen offers a chance to an advanced Cypraeidae specialist to add this legendary rarity to their holdings, without having to pay the current market price of around 8,000-10,000 EUR for a live-collected example. The species was collected during the 1970s-1980s, and has never been freshly available since. The specimen was obtained by the deep-sea fishing vessel ‘Southern Mariner’, which obtained several of the known specimens. Data: 35 km off Durban, Natal, South Africa; upon sand/rubble substrate; 1,000 m; trawled; November 1983. Size: 29.7 mm. Grading: Good. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
