Item | # 0003733086 |
Family | Volutidae |
Name | Melo amphora - UNIQUE; 'ZEBRA' PATTERN , Lightfoot, 1786 |
Size | 300 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This famous, UNIQUE, and INCREDIBLE specimen must surely rate as one of the GREATEST BIG shells in the world. Collected over half a century ago, this ‘zebra’ form is exceedingly rare. I believe there is one other specimen with a similar pattern, but this is the ONLY specimen I have ever seen, and I know of no other example ever having been offered on the world market. A ‘museum piece’ of conchology, now to be passed to another dedicated collector of rare Volutidae, or exceptional giant-sized shells. Note: This large shell will require substantial packaging for safe transit, but I will round down postage to anywhere in the world to 50 EUR. Please factor this cost when bidding. Data: Swain Reefs, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 4 m; dived; 1970. Size: c. 300 mm. Grading: Fine++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
