Priene scabrum Very Nice, Selected
41.4 mm     Caldera, northern Chile     2,00 €
Item# 0003760833
FamilyRanellidae
NamePriene scabrum - Very Nice, Selected , (P. P. King, 1832)
Size41.4 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteA very nice and selected specimen of Priene scabrum, collected washed ashore fresh dead. This species is the only representative of the genus Priene, a genus endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This is the only Ranellidae found in shallow waters in northern Chile. The shell of this species is usually in very bad condition, with broken protoconch and eroded first whorls. They also have a thick but dehiscent brown hairy periostracum, which hiddens the very nice spiral and axial sculpture in this species. This is a selected specimen and it only has some erosion in the periostracum, particularly in the first whorls, but the sculpture of the periostracum is very nice and hairy, different from normally eroded specimens.
