Item | # 0003778675 |
Family | Fissurellidae |
Name | Fissurella maxima - Very very nice, tiny! , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 32.3 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very very nice and tiny specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurellidae. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of giant Lessonia algae. Large Fissurella species in Chile are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and almost always damaged. The dorsum of the shell is always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. This specimen was collected alive washed ashore, and it is in excellent condition for the species. It was lightly cleaned but can be cleaned to perfection to show the nice cream background and the darker rays on the dorsum. |
