| Note | Collected over half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of extreme deep-water trawling around Taiwan, this massive GIANT is of almost unbelievable proportions. Whilst many consider, (and advertise), specimens of 110-114 mm as ‘giant’, this shell dispels such a notion, and illustrates the size the species is capable of attaining at hypermaturity. Incredible solidity and weight, only properly comprehended with the shell in the hand. Exemplary quality for such monumental size and age; habitat; and collection method, with nothing but the typical irregularities always present in giants of this species, yet far less than usually seen. Perfect central axis symmetry throughout, often lost in extreme old age giants. Retention of enormous original operculum. Definitely for the Conidae specialist requiring an illustration of the full extent of development of the species, or the dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Off Dongsha Islands, Caijin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan; upon sand/mud substrate; 200-300 m; trawled; 1974. Size: 163.8 mm. Grading: Fine++; w/o.
